 1298. Mookuthi Amman (Tamil, 2020)

          Comedy, Drama

          Rating: 3/5

"'Mookuthi Amman' says there are Gods and NO Godmen. Yet we have to find God in our ways. "

'Mookuthi Amman' directed by the duo of  Balaji-Saravanan will be a fun movie if you are an 'unorthodox believer'. A believer who could avoid the mediators like Godmen when searching God is common nowadays, and I specified the unorthodox-believer in that sense.

The movie theme seems to be a cliche nowadays as attempts like Oh My God! are still in place. The surroundings of the main plot are funny with crazy characters.

A youngster Engels Ramaswamy (Balaji) who tries to meet both ends of life with his mother (Urvashi) and his 3 sisters got a chance to meet the 'Mookuthi Amman of Vellimalai'. Ever imagined a God appearing in front of a believer and asking to do something for them? Here, Mookuthi Amman wants her to be famous like other international Gods from India.

We read in stories on how the ancient sages got to see the Gods they worshipped. They used mantras for that. But our hero Engels Ramaswamy could do that in other ways. That whole thing was funny.

When devotees have their family deity and when they are discarded, the deity may become jealous. This statement depicts the fun part of the movie. the ever crazy characters become crazier at this time. For me, there was no dull moment in the movie at these times even though we know what we are going to see at the end.

The movie is a satire connecting the life of a common man with God. The first half of the movie is a fun ride than the latter half. In my view, Urvashi is undoubtedly the best actress in the country. When she is challenged by someone, then there is no stopping. After 'Soorarai Pottru', Urvashi again outshined every other character including Nayanthara in the movie. Her energetic performance is the best side of the movie.

Nayanthara, as the title character appeared to be beautiful with her looks and did well with her character too. Balaji's Engels Ramaswamy was even crazier than the others.

Apart from the cliche story, the second half lacks premises to create a wow factor. The Godman, whose character is a mix of many Godmen in the country didn't feel so funny considering the whole mood of the movie. Along with that, there is nothing much happening in the second half of the movie. That appears to be a let down in the story.

Meanwhile, the movie as a whole is funny, and thought-provoking at times, especially the 'concept of content' in which a man should behave in his life when he is not satisfied.

Mookuthi Amman was hilarious at times with it's the fun part and energetic performances from characters. This could work in a skit. But not in a movie. As a whole, the movie didn't use the possibility of the theme and lacks depth overall.
